The UK has some of the oldest housing stock in Europe, much of it designed to hold heat in rather than let it out. That approach made sense for most of the country’s history. It makes far less sense now. The Met Office has confirmed 2026 is on track to be one of the UK’s four warmest years on record, and days above 30°C — once rare outside high summer — are becoming a regular feature of the British spring and summer.

The people most exposed to extreme heat are often the least able to do anything about it. Research from the University of Reading’s Energy Demand Research Centre found that older residents and renters are among the least likely to have any form of air conditioning, despite facing some of the greatest health risks during a heatwave.

The UK needs a proper cooling strategy — not just more air conditioning, but homes designed to cool sensibly in the first place.
